Thorough Examinations: Are they a legal requirement?

Ability Handling Ltd were recently supplying a Doosan Electric Forklift to a customer when he became quite confused in regards to Thorough Examinations and whether or not it was a legal requirement for him to have in place.

Many people believe that it is not a legal requirement to have a Thorough Examination however it is. You should think of this as a MOT test for say a car or lorry.

A Thorough Examination is a statutory requirement for lifting equipment under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER 98), Regulation 9. Ability Handling are fully accredited under the CFTS scheme to provide this safety critical service.

Keeping Safe and Legal will not break the bank - Your forklift and your business can be covered for less than £100.00 per year !

Within the examination a report will be provided and in this you will see whether the forklift or lifting equipment is safe to use. If it isn’t then there will be advice and pointers as to why it isn’t safe for use and what you need to do to fix this. Thorough Examinations are just like an MOT.

Thorough Examinations should be carried out a minimum of once a year although this is dependent upon the usage of the forklift truck or lifting equipment. These are nothing to be worried about and if you have regular forklift maintenance then this will bring up any problems which can then be resolved before they worsen.

Ability Handling offer forklift maintenance which is tailored to you, our customer. The time periods between the services may vary dependent upon its usage and working environment. Our forklift truck service engineers are extremely experienced and work in accordance with the guidelines set out by specific manufacturers.
